'Roll' is a piece whose title - of the etymology meaning 'little wheel' - suggests the action or motion that its shape implies, an unsettling back and forth that speaks for the world's current unsteady and shifty situation. Made of cardboard collected from household materials, namely toilet rolls, this piece also speaks for the context in which it was made - the UK’s first 2020 lockdown - which conditioned artists' way of making with the means at hand.
‘The white patina not only aims at mimicking the surface of the original material I used to make the piece - cardboard and toilet rolls - but also to echo it back to some of my earlier white marble works. White bronzes are quite rare and the challenge had always intrigued me, so here was the perfect opportunity to give it a go. The level of details captured in the cast and the patina are really what elevates this bronze project of mine to any previous ones to a higher level of challenge and finish.’
