In 2018, Alla Malova began a collaboration with the neuroscientist Dr. Christopher Timmermann, whose research focuses on the effects of psychedelics in biology and psychology. He has led the first neuroimaging study of DMT - a potent psychedelic present in the Ayahuasca Amazonian brew - in the human brain. This series of work asks: how do we enter the subjective reality of another person?

Initially existing as a video work, ‘dieDronEmbosances’, the 3D scanned body of the artist transitions successively into that of the scientist and back while continually spinning on its axes over a 28 minute period – the exact duration of Timmermann’s original experience with DMT. The dynamic flow of transformation in dieDronEmbosances is overlapped by another mutation commanded by brain activity data recorded in the course of Timmermann’s own experience during a DMT injection inside a fMRI scanner.

By working with the 3D scans as a digital sculpture, additional transformations take place as the data from the brain scans are converted into a malleable force field, pushing & pulling the forms into a fresh configuration. Data is converted to artistic process, creating a sculpture that can only exist through the use of digital technology. 

Each edition is numbered in relation to the exact timing of when the capture was drawn out of the original experience in the fMRI scanner.

 
 

Alla Malova is a Russian-born multimedia artist, sculptor and sufi dancer, working between London & Geneva. She is currently undertaking a PhD at the Royal College of Art, London, where she also gained an MA in Sculpture.

A question that underlies Malova’s practice is that of blindness as expressed by the action of not seeing; embodiment and becoming ‘something other’ are manifest by casting processes that reveal the voids and interiors of found forms. Elements of history, architecture and dream combine to embed unpredictability and mutability.
