Open Call: Digital
FAQ
Why are you offering this opportunity?
We are excited about how digital technology can take a new idea & quickly generate a quality representation of it in bronze. This technology opens up a space for speed, energy & experiment in developing a form & finish in the costly & time-consuming bronze casting process. We have a research budget to spend on developing 6 new artworks by artists who are either entirely new or experienced in bronze casting and/or digital technology. Working with our digital technicians, the programme will enable the selected artists to rapidly present how a new or existing work would look in a monumental material.
From the Open Call we will pick 6 artworks from artists that have the ambition to research and/or continue with digital processes in their work.
What is 3D scanning?
3D scanning is the process of analysing a real-world object or environment to collect data on its shape and possibly its appearance (e.g. colour). The collected data can then be used to construct digital 3D models. There are multiple methods available, including Laser 3D Scanning, Photogrammetry, and Structured Light Scanning. The choice of which 3D scanning technique we will use is dependent on your object/idea.
How does sculpting digitally work?
Digital sculpting, also known as sculpt modelling or 3D sculpting, is the use of software that offers tools to push, pull, smooth, grab, pinch or otherwise manipulate a digital object as if it were made of a real-life substance such as clay. Working with you, our technicians will create 3D versions of your reference images that can be manipulated and refined.
What’s a render?
A render refers to the application of algorithms to a digital image file which convert the image information within the file into a viewable format on a viewing device - ensuring the object is seen in a highly finished, accessible way & often highly photorealistic. We are able to match in detail the finishes available in the foundry, allowing the render to demonstrate how the object will look when it is cast in metal.
Will the work be for sale?
If at the end of the process both parties agree to make a bronze and sell the work, it then turns into a commercial deal and will be discussed & agreed case-by-case. All the work selected and made as part of this Open Call will be shown & platformed on the LBE website.
What about copyright?
Copyright remains with the artist. If agreed to be sold as part of the LBE catalogue, LBE retains the exclusive right to cast the work as a bronze at this size.
